Two habits do more for a washer’s lifespan than anything else: cleaning the drain pump filter and letting the drum air out between loads.
What to do, and how often
- Clean the drain pump filter every 1–2 months, more often with pet hair or small kids’ clothing
- Leave the door or lid cracked open between loads so it can dry out — this is the single biggest thing that prevents musty smells and mold
- Wipe down the rubber door gasket on front-loaders, where lint and residue collect
- Use the recommended amount of HE detergent — too much causes buildup, not cleaner clothes
- Run an empty hot-water cycle with a washer cleaner every month or two
What not to do yourself
- Don’t ignore a persistent burning smell — stop the machine and call rather than running it again
- Don’t force a stuck lid lock open — that’s a safety interlock, not something to defeat
