Repair Decisions

When is it worth calling a professional instead of troubleshooting yourself?

A lot of appliance problems are genuinely safe and worth checking yourself first — clogged filters, blocked vents, unlatched doors. But a specific set of problems should go straight to a professional, every time.

Always call for these

  • Anything involving a gas line, a gas smell, or burner ignition
  • Anything that requires opening an electrical panel or testing line-voltage components
  • Anything involving a sealed refrigerant system — that’s EPA-regulated, not a DIY project under any circumstances
  • A door switch, lid lock, or thermal cutoff that isn’t working — these are safety interlocks, not inconveniences

Worth checking yourself first

  • Airflow: clogged filters, blocked vents, dirty coils
  • Door and lid seals
  • Water supply valves and drain hoses
  • Simple resets and control-lock settings

Why this split exists

It’s not about what you’re capable of — it’s about what’s actually safe without specialized tools and training, and what a technician needs to see in its original, undisturbed state to diagnose correctly. Taking something apart before we arrive can genuinely make the visit take longer, not shorter.
