If dishes are coming out with food residue or film, the cause is almost always something blocking water flow inside the machine, not a failed motor.
What usually causes it
- The filter at the bottom of the tub is clogged with food debris
- Spray arm holes are clogged, or the arm is physically blocked by a tall dish
- Hard water or detergent buildup leaving a film
- Overloading, blocking water and detergent from reaching everything
What you can check yourself
- Remove and rinse the bottom filter — most modern dishwashers need this done by hand regularly, it isn’t optional maintenance
- Spin the spray arms by hand to make sure they turn freely, and check the holes aren’t clogged
- Make sure tall items aren’t blocking the upper spray arm
- Try a rinse-aid and a dishwasher-cleaner cycle if there’s visible film or buildup

If the filter’s clean, the spray arms turn freely, and dishes are still coming out dirty — especially if water isn’t filling or draining properly — that points to a pump or water-inlet issue, which needs a technician.
