A freezer that runs but doesn’t get cold enough is almost always about airflow or a seal, not the compressor itself.
What usually causes it
- Condenser coils clogged with dust
- A door that isn’t sealing, especially on chest freezers with a worn gasket
- An overpacked freezer blocking internal air circulation
- Frost buildup around the evaporator coil restricting airflow
What you can check yourself
- Check the door gasket for gaps or stiffness, and clean any debris stuck to it
- Make sure items aren’t packed against the back wall or vents
- Vacuum accessible condenser coils
- If there’s heavy frost buildup inside, a full defrost (with everything removed) can restore airflow
When to call
If it’s still not holding temperature after a defrost and a clean gasket check, or if you hear it running nonstop without getting cold, that’s a sealed-system issue — refrigerant work is EPA-regulated and isn’t something to attempt yourself.
