Uneven baking, or a temperature that doesn’t match the dial, is a common complaint — and it’s usually one component, not the whole appliance.
What usually causes it
- The oven’s actual temperature has drifted from what the dial shows (common as ovens age)
- A bake or broil element that’s partially failed
- The door not sealing fully, letting heat escape
- Using the wrong rack position for what you’re cooking
What you can check yourself
- Use an oven thermometer to check what temperature it’s actually reaching versus the setting
- Look at the bake element (the coil at the bottom, if visible) for visible damage — a section that doesn’t glow evenly when heating is a sign it’s failing
- Check the door seal for gaps or a worn gasket
- Try adjusting rack position — the center rack is right for most baking
When to call
⚠️ For gas ranges and ovens, any ignition, burner, or gas-smell issue is not a DIY check — call. For electric ovens: if the element looks intact but temperature is still off by a lot, or the oven won’t reach temperature at all, that’s a thermostat or sensor issue for a technician.
